American Airlines rejected any merger talks with United Airlines, in a statement. The company made clear it was “not engaged with or interested in any discussions” on the matter, arguing that a combination would harm competition and consumers, and would conflict with the Trump administration’s own antitrust principles. United CEO Scott Kirby formally proposed the merger idea to the Trump administration in February. Kirby argued that a larger United would better compete with Middle Eastern carriers on international routes, where US airlines are losing market share. A combined United-American would become the world’s largest airline and control roughly 40% of US domestic capacity. President Trump also publicly opposed a potential merger between the two airlines, stating that he does not want the carriers to combine since both are performing well. His stance aligns with concerns that a combined entity would reduce competition and push fares higher.
American Airlines’ bonds traded stable with its 3.375% 2027s at 98.5, yielding 4.9%.
